I really can’t wrap my head around any of this. The FDA appears to be close to approving the sale of genetically modified (GM) salmon. To me, GM or genetically engineered (GE) foods - especially animal products (this salmon would be the first available in the U.S.) - are problematic as it is. But to top it off, there is no mandate that GM/GE foods be labeled as such. As for salmon, whether...

So far, we’ve used the vanilla balsamic vinegar we purchased from Olive Creations in two dishes - one sweet, one savory (both vegan!) - and both were delicious. The first: Brussels Sprouts with Beans & Grains This was one of those on-the-spot, use-what’s-in-the-fridge/cupboards meals that was simple and super healthy. It’s a combination of some of my favorite foods, and...

Whole wheat pastry flour is a fool-proof way to bake muffins, batter breads and cookies with whole wheat and without the risk of a dense, dry or gummy final product. When using other whole wheat or whole grain flours, the ingredient ratio/balance can be a little trickier to finesse in order to end up with a desirable texture, but whole wheat pastry flour makes it easy - no modifications necessary...

Thanks so much to my awesome colleagues for surprising me with these mags (they know me so well!) and a lovely card for my birthday :) I’m lucky to work with such a great group!

Having lived in Manhattan for more than 5 years I’m really late to the game on this one, but I was only just recently enlightened (thanks, Quyen!) to the existance of the Hester Street Fair (open every Saturday). Better yet, though, is the craziness taking place down there this Sunday, October 23rd:

My office provides free lunch everyday, which is a tremendous money-saving perk. Usually it’s healthy and at least fairly good, but there are the inevitable days (e.g., pizza Fridays and occasionally less-than-desirable options on Wednesdays, which changes from week to week) when buying something separate becomes warranted. Given the fact that I’m not paying for lunch the vast majority...

Here comes the first of a series of posts that are ridiculously long overdue … but, better late than never! This summer was filled with many memorable meals, and I’ve been holding off on properly documenting most until this new blog was set up. I’ll start with the one that was, without question, the best! This particular meal was homemade - and homemade for me; my only...

Made a great green salad for dinner last night with Jame: baby spinach, cucumber, green pepper, avocado, broccoli, yellow grape tomatoes, mushrooms, a little goat cheese on top and some green olives on the side. While I usually opt to make a simple vinaigrette from scratch, if I reach for something store-bought chances are it’s Cindy’s Kitchen - the Barcelona Vinaigrette and Lemon and...

New Anthony Bourdain show to premier Nov. 21st... →
Sounds like another potentially very entertaining venture from Anthony Bourdain!Given the roll he’s been on with his antics, one-liners and cheeky-yet-insightful commentary on No Reservations, I can’t help but have pretty high hopes for The Layover, which will include a different focus and a more personal perspective from Bourdain himself on the cities he visits.

Best Spots for Fresh Watermelon Juice in NYC (via... →
I had fresh watermelon juice for the first time just this summer, and it is hands down one of the most refreshingly delicious juices I’ve ever had, periodendofdiscussion - and particularly perfect for a summer as stiflingly hot and humid as this one.  Based on SeriousEats’ recommendations, Coppelia is now first on my list of where to go!

Right on, Er!!  Two amazing performances within one week’s time - we lucked out :) frostbites: Last Wednesday, Sarah and I went to see a production by the American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center for the first time since we participated in their Under 30 summer deal two summers ago (a great option for anyone wanting to get a chance to see ballet on the main stage by the way!). New NYTimes Cooking Column →
Chef David Tanis, who has worked in the kitchen of Alice Waters’ renowned Chez Panisse for 25 years, is leaving the restaurant this fall to focus more on writing — namely, to helm a new column at the Times called “City Kitchen.” His first piece went up today, and I’m liking both his writing and the looks of the accompanying recipe: cannellini bean salad with shaved...

Ottolenghi
Yotam Ottolenghi is without a doubt, in my opinion, one of the most accessibly creative and inspiring chefs today.  I find his background to be as fascinating as the colorful, wholesome recipes on which he has built his food empire. On Monday, I had the wonderful opportunity to meet him at a book signing and discussion - read on after the jump for more details about Yotem and his new must-have...

Coppelia Opens Today →
Coppelia, a 24-hour Cuban luncheonette, is opening today on W 14th Street near 7th Ave. Loving the concept as it is, and to top if off, Coppelia is the latest venture by Chef Julian Media (of one of my faves, Toloache, as well as Yerba Buena).  Can’t wait to pay Coppelia a visit. Tease your taste buds with a peek at the menu!

NYMag Gives Danji 4 Stars →
A much-deserved stellar review!  I’ve been a little obsessed with Danji since it opened in December, and am thrilled to see it’s receiving such ratings.  And I couldn’t agree more with the breakdown of the 4 stars: “One star for the concept; two for the cooking, the artful plating, and the cheerful service; plus a bonus star for the sliders.” (While I’ve loved...

Sad… I really liked this place - was a great spot for a big going-away dinner for a friend moving to New Orleans last year, and also for amazing fried pickles (I tried them for the first time at Mara’s)!

Last night’s episode of “No Reservations” - which took place in Vienna - was a great one as usual, but probably one of the best in terms of Bourdain’s constant one-liners.  Lucky for us, Eater.com compiled a list of 14 of the best Bourdainisms from the show!

Latest Obsession: Roasted/"Crack" Kale
I don’t know how I only just had this for the first time last week, but I can’t get enough of it!  E. and I had a great dinner last week at Whitman’s - sharing burgers (the mouth-watering and unique “juicy lucy” as well as the “PB&B” at our waiter’s recommendation… it too was shockingly good) and chip-like fried pickles - and she also knew...

Banana Nutella Mini Muffins →
Made these on Valentines Day… YUM. I halved the recipe (used 2 medium bananas) and the batter filled one 24-cup mini muffin tray. Not too sweet, very moist, and I mean it’s banana and nutella - can’t go wrong with that!  Highly recommend the recipe.   Photo credit: http://sweetandsavory.com
